What Is An Essential Oil Diffuser and What Does It Do?

An essential oil diffuser is a means of dispersing essential oils around a room or a specific area, allowing the fragrance to fill the space. There are many ways to do this, from the very simple (which we'll be discussing here) to the very elaborate. There are many ways to disperse the oil fragrance. Most of the modern diffusers use heat, either via electrical or battery power, or by heating with a flame under an oil holder.

As with everything, the drive for oil diffusers to become more and more complicated and technical means that everyone wants the 'next bet thing'. We now see diffusers with ultrasonic diffusion offering a humidifier, air purifier, atomizer and aromatherapy diffuser all wrapped into one machine. Sure, they distribute the particles more effectively by dispersing them into the air in microparticles that the DIY oil diffuser may not be able to compete with, BUT, a homemade diffuser is going to produce most of the benefits an expensive model would.

Essential Oil Diffuser Benefits

There are a plethora of benefits to using essential oils. Breathing in the molecules activates the control center of the brain, the amygdala. This manages emotions and also memories. With the right oil recipe, exciting things can occur. Here are just a few great benefits you can get from essential oil use.:

  • Emotions are calmed
  • The body and mind can relax
  • Your mood can be positively affected
  • Concentration can be improved
  • Stress and tension are released.

Sounds great right? You want it all, and NOW! Ok, let's look at how you can get some of these extraordinary benefits without needing to buy a diffuser.

15 Simple Ways To Diffuse Essential Oils Without A Diffuser

Here are some of the most common DIY diffuser methods, all are super easy to set up.

1. Use A Cotton Ball Or Two

Grab a cotton ball from your makeup bag, or pick some up from Amazon like this 3 pack of organic cotton balls. Simply place a few drops of essential oil on a cotton ball, then place it in front of a source or air flow. In your car this could be in front of a vent, at home, in front of a blow fan or if you have air ventilation under your floor, a cotton ball or two on top of the floorboard vent will get those essential oil particles blown into the air.

2. The Tissue Method

Sprinkling your fave oils onto a tissue or a hankerchief, naptin or towel, and either handing it near a source of moving air works great. Alternatively, laying it on your pillow or on your headboard can be great for improving your sleep. Lavender is great at night and really aids restful sleep.

3. Use A Spray Bottle

I love this method, it's so simple and is a great way to get those diffused oils into the air where you need them. Add a few drops of your chosen oil to a spray bottle, top up with water, give it a shake and you're ready to go. This also works well as a DIY essential oil air freshener.

I like these Beautify Beauties Flairosol bottles the best, they work great for essential oils, cleaning, gardening and more.

4. Wool Dryer Balls

Not so much a diffuser for use in the room, although you certainly could use these in place or tissues or cotton balls. Wool dryer balls are sheeps wool balls (you can also get Alpaca ones) that you add a little essential oil to and toss into the clothes drying machine, to impart some wonderful aromas to your clothes.

This 6 pack of reusable sheep wool balls are also a natural fabric softener.

5. In The Bathtub

Adding a few drops of oil to a hot bath is an excellent way to unwind. The oils are released into the air as they combine with steam, creating a wonderful smell, and allowing you to breathe them in. They'll also leave your skin soft and nourished.

6. On The Stove

Add a few drops of oil to a pan of hot water simmering on the stove. This is a great way to diffuse the oils into the air, be careful not to leave the pan to boil dry (this is the bane of my wife's life when I steam vegetables!)

7. Create A Simple Drawer Sachet

Grab a square of scrap fabric, place a tablespoon of dry rice in the center. Add a few drops of your fave essential oil to the rice, before bunching up the corners and sides of the fabric and tying with a ribbon or elastic band. You'll end up with a nice little bundle of aromatic delight that you can place in a clothes draw or leave in the room. Placing on or near a radiator (not somewhere the bundle could combust) is a nice way to speed up the diffusion as the oils are heated.

8. Make A Reed Diffuser

Reeds are an awesome way to diffuse essential oils. Simple to use, cheap, and they add a certain modern flair to any room.

You can pick up 100 reed diffuser sticks for just a few bucks, like this 100 pack of reed sticks in a handmade linen bag on Amazon.

These come if a lovely bag, are 9" long and 3mm in diameter. Ideal for the home or office. We have some, my wife loves her essential oils!

9. Furnace Filter Method

Adding a few drops of essential oil to your furnace filter is a great way to get those wonderfully fresh aromas into every corner of your home.

Add a couple of drops the the filter every 2nd or 3rd day to keep your home fragrant. This method really is awesome to get the fragrance around your entire home,
